Living in Westmount

Westmount is a quiet peaceful suburban neighbourhood located in the northwest corner of Oakville. The neighbourhood is a popular landing spot for families due to its spacious houses, strong school system, and tight knit community. Development of Westmount only started in the mid 1990s, so the area is much newer than other neighbourhoods in Oakville. The houses in Westmount are all newly built using modern day building standards that avoid the pitfalls that come with some older homes. Westmount has a small-town vibe with a lot of greenery in the surrounding area. The neighbourhood is also situated just a few minutes north of the Queen Elizabeth Expressway, so you could get into Mississauga or Toronto in under an hour.

Where is Westmount?

Westmount sits between Grand Oak Trail and Third Line with Dundas Street West acting as its northern boundary and Upper Middle Road West acting as its southern boundary. Going south on Third Line will bring you to the Queen Elizabeth Expressway which you can use to get to downtown Oakville in just a few minutes. Westmount’s residents do most of their shopping in the downtown core, mainly at Oakville Place, the shopping center at the corner of Leighland Avenue and Trafalgar Road.

Homes in Westmount

The residential area in Westmount is made up primarily of houses built in the last 25 years, however there are a few townhouse complexes scattered throughout the neighbourhood as well. The houses in Westmount tend to be detached and built on plots that are smaller than some older neighbourhoods in Oakville. To make up for the smaller plots, the houses in Westmount are extremely spacious, some being as large as 4000 sq. ft. There are also a few clusters of smaller semi-detached homes in the area.

Making the move to Westmount

Many families in Toronto and Mississauga have been making the move to Oakville, and the Westmount neighbourhood specifically. Westmount provides larger houses at more affordable prices than you would find in the larger cities. It is the perfect neighbourhood for young couples looking to buy their first home and start a family. Making the move to a new area can be daunting, especially if you are moving in with your significant other and the two of you need to combine all your stuff under one roof. Self-storage can be a great tool to alleviate some of the stress on move in day and is also helpful to have even after you have moved into your new home.

Currently, Storwell Self Storage is offering my clients an exclusive offer of 4 weeks of free self-storage at any of their facilities. Storwell has locations in Scarborough, Etobicoke, and one location in Mississauga on Royal Windsor Drive, which is just a short drive away from Westmount. If you are making the move from Toronto or Mississauga to Westmount and need extra storage, you can call or visit a Storwell facility in person to demo a unit.

Quick access to healthcare facilities in Westmount

One of the main benefits of living in Westmount is being near a state-of-the-art health care facility. The Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital is a multi-building medical complex outfitted with the latest technology. The hospital is located on the corner of Dundas Street West and Third Line, within walking distance of Westmount. This proximity to healthcare gives you the peace of mind that you and your family will be able to receive quick medical attention should any health issues arise.

Westmount has a great assortment of parks to explore with the whole family. Woodgate Drive Park is in the heart of Westmount and has a play structure and a large, wooded area with a walking trail.  McCraney Creek flows past Woodgate and continues right through the rest of Westmount. You can follow the walking trail along the path of the creek from one end of Westmount to the other.

West Oak Trails Community Park sits just to the south of Westoak Trails Boulevard and has a well-maintained baseball diamond, three full sized soccer fields, a running track, and a playground. Up the road from West Oak Trails is Glen Abbey Park which has a full basketball court, two baseball diamonds, two soccer fields, a running track, four tennis courts, a playground, and a skate park.

The Community Centre is also right next door to the Oakville Public Library – Glen Abbey Branch, which runs various afterschool program and events for children in the area.

In the north end of Westmount on the corner of Pine Glen Road and Third Line you will find the Oakville Soccer Club. The club has an indoor facility as well as four well manicured soccer fields. There are many programs that the club offers including referee training, youth and adult house leagues, competitive matches, and soccer summer camps.

The Best Schools in Westmount

One of the main reasons why Westmount has become such a popular location for young families is the incredible selection of schools in the area. The Halton District School Board and Halton Catholic District School Boar both operate schools in the Westmount area.

A special mention should be made for Abbey Park High School located on Glen Abbey Gate and Third Line. Abbey Park received extremely high grades in the Fraser Institutes Annual Report Card for 2020 and was ranked as the 10thbest secondary school in all of Ontario out of nearly 800 other schools. Garth Webb Secondary School on Westoak Trails Boulevard is another amazing high school that was ranked as the 27th best secondary school by the Fraser Institute in 2020.

Westmount also has several highly rated elementary schools in the area including Palermo Public School, Emily Carr Public School, St. John Paul II Catholic Elementary School, and Heritage Glen Public School.

The best restaurants in Westmount

There is an eclectic selection of dining options in and around the Westmount neighbourhood. Peppino’s Oven is a relaxed restaurant with on-site bakery and deli located on Kingsridge Drive that is serving up sandwiches, pizza, pasta, and wings. On Dundas Street West you will find The Olive Press, which is serving authentic Italian food in a cozy intimate setting. For amazing Thai takeout just go down the road to Postmaster Drive and visit Thai Smile, which is one of the best Thai restaurants in Oakville. After dinner you can get dessert at Tria Café and Bakery on Old Bronte Road, which is serving up delicate pastries and delicious coffee drinks.
