Living in Southdown

Southdown is located at the southwest corner of Mississauga. It shares a border with the Town of Oakville to the west. To the east is the Clarkson Village neighbourhood. The QEW highway is located to the north and Lake Ontario to the south. The residential area is situated north of Royal Windsor Drive with a commercial business corridor to the south. Sheridan Creek meanders through this neighbourhood spilling out to the Rattray Marsh Conservation Area situated on the shoreline of Lake Ontario.

 

Southdown neighbourhood landmarks include the Clarkson Community Centre and Library. Clarkson Park, Ontario Racquet Club and Scooter’s Roller Palace.

 

History of Southdown

In the early 1800s Southdown was a farming community. The arrival of a shipping dock and railway lines in the 1850s attracted industry to the area which has had primarily industrial land use ever since.

 

Homes in Southdown

The houses in this neighbourhood are mostly detached with wide lots and double driveways. These homes would have been built largely in the 1960s and 70s and include ranch-style bungalows, split-level homes and detached one-and-half storey and two-storey homes.There are also pockets of high-rise apartment buildings.

 

Lifestyle in Southdown

Southdown residents will regularly shop in Clarkson Village along Lakeshore Blvd. West. You can find all the essential here along with services and restaurants. Sheridan Centre located at 2225 Erin Mills Parkway is another popular shopping destination that is within a fifteen minute drive.

 

Recreation in Southdown

Clarkson Community Centre and Library located at 2475 Truscott Drive is the main recreational hub within this neighbourhood. This facility includes: the Clarkson Branch Library, Clarkson Arena, a full size gymnasium, an outdoor children’s water play area and a variety of multipurpose rooms. Clarkson offers an array of programs for all age groups. There are numerous smaller parks scattered throughout the neighbourhood to take the dog for a walk or the children to a playground.

 

Arts in Southdown

Visual Arts Mississauga is located at 4170 Riverwood Park Lane. This centre offers a myriad of arts programs for children and adults.

 

Transportation in Southdown

The Clarkson GO Station located at 1110 Southdown Road  is a railway station and bus station in the GO Transit network. It is a stop on the Lakeshore West line train service which connects passengers to Union Station in Toronto
